I just got a carrier/plate combo from this company & was very impressed with the value for my money. Hope to have a full review soon. And yes, I'm going to shoot my plates.

Very interesting site.

I happened to talk briefly to a distributor of these Patriot plates at a recent, local gun show here in Jackson. I wasn't really in the market at the time so I didn't get any info from him but the videos they have posted on their site were very interesting. Mil-spec steel for the plate seems like a good deal for what they're asking (IMO).

I will be very interested in a future report if you are able to perform the first hand test you spoke of. It seems the prices for these types of carriers and plates have come down a lot recently. Honestly, until the last couple of years, I did not know mil-spec plates were available to the civilian market.

Just curious, did you order the flat plates or the ones that are curved to fit. I have never tried on either but it seem that the curved might be a little more comfortable. Also, I'm 6'4" 280lbs. and fairly broad across the chest, ha-ha, so in your opinion do you think these plates will be wide enough for someone my size? I have a lot to research on this subject and value first hand knowledge. I look forward to your review once yours arrives.

Thanks for posting

I bought a set of the Patriot Plates and carrier. They do NOT cover my whole chest area, but, they do protect the most vital areas. They are heavy. I also got a set of spall guards for the plates that are made of kevlar. They were 100.00 but they have a lifetime warranty. There is a link to Maingun.biz on the bottom of the page. If you click on the link, prepperhaven.org gets 5% of the amount spent. It helps pay the hosting fees. BTW, I am 6'4" and about 280 myself.

Update:

I have been coating my plates with bedliner, building up a layer over time to reduce spall/splatter from strikes. Pics soon & a shot test to come.

Where did you get your spall guards?

There is a guy on the falfiles board that makes and sells them. I will PM his info.

Got it, thanks!

Been steady lining my plates with build up (spray on) and I think roll on would have been better. Just noticed that Maingun is offering curved plates now.

I don't know that I'd want an impact on the bend to deflect into my chest, but maybe I'm overthinking it.

Going to shoot my plates later this month with pics.

Sorry for taking so long. Been busy with other projects.

I started spraying mine with a rattle can and I saw it was going to cost a small fortune. I didn't have the patience to wait between coats and a couple of hard hits and it will fall off. Line-x dealer said he would spray them for 100.00, The spall guards seemed like the best choice for me.

Update:

Much later than anticipated, this project is back on the front burner.

I've been studying fragmentation & spall protection & it seems someone already came up with a cheap & effective solution... HDPE. High Density Polyethylene, commonly used in kitchen cutting boards. They catch the fragments after the plate is struck. I bought a 15x20x1/2 cutting board at Sam's club for $10.00 and used a router to cut an inlet for the plate to fit in and not slide around. Tomorrow I am going to epoxy the plate to the board & clamp to dry. After that I will be wrapping it with layers of heavy Gorilla (duct) tape. Then I am going to set it up for testing with M855, M193 and AP30.06

Please post the test results. I got my plates from Maingun and while heavy, they should do the job.

I got mine from ar-500 I think the plates (curved and coated) and plate carrier was like maybe 250 ? They cover most of me, and are around 20 pounds. If you cinch them up tight the weight isn't so bad. Mine are mainly for knock in the night or a tornado or hurricane scenario. I figure it's better to have a set than not have one.
