How to prepare for home quarantine

Postby fastback65 » Wed Jul 30, 2014 7:14 am

With the new threat of Ebola an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and with this there is ... No CURE! Quarantine is the only answer.

In the event of some kind of pandemic/epidemic, you should be prepared to quarantine yourself in your home. Lets discuss a few thing you should have at hand.

You should plan on your self imposed lock down from two weeks to as far out as sixty days.

1. Avoid contact with others. This is number one for obvious reasons. The less contact you have with others the better.

2. Consider everybody as infected. Even family members. If you or your family have prolonged going to work, any one of you could be carrying the infection. Avoid hugs and kisses with your family for at least 2 weeks to be sure of negative infection. You may consider wearing gloves and mask around the house if you are not sure.

3. If somebody in the house is infected, that person needs to be segregated to a room of the house and that room needs to be duct taped closed and opened only to pass necessary items through stock this room with food and water, medical supplies, sanitation facilities, communication, cleaning tools, entertainment (books, radio, TV, etc.)

If the person needs looked after designate one person for this and one only using full protocol, respirator and Tyvek coveralls note rule #8

4. Rubber gloves. Infectious disease can live on porous items for up wards of 72 hrs. Best not to trust this estimate. Consider all items coming in from the outside to be contaminated and should be washed with anti bacterial soap or a chlorine mix before handling with bare hands. Therefore, any item you pick up after the emergency starts need to be handled accordingly.

5. N95 & N100 Masks. Do not underestimate airborne particles. These will be the number one infection transmission method and should be mitigated.

6. If your are using a evaporative cooler, turn it off and seal your vents with duct tape. Think about a window mount air conditioner instead.

7. Seal air leaks in your home. All it takes is one particle of infectious material to doom your whole family. Since you will be indoors with not a lot to do, do this.

8. Any time you come into near contact with anybody who is infected, you will need a shower. This is not an option.

9. Never touch your face with your hands. Your hands by default will be the most likely area of your body to contain infected debris.

10. All common items in the house should be disinfected after use regardless if anybody is sick. The kitchen and bathrooms should be meticulously cleaned after use. Every use.

11. If you are able to obtain Flu mitigation medication such as Tami-flu, get those now. Be sure to have entire courses of meds for every member of your family. Also get family prescription meds filled for the duration as well.

12. Your neighbors are not your friends. Do not watch their kids for them. Do not invite them in. Talk to them through windows. Don't even open the door to them. If they ask to talk with you outside or insist, tell them you are sick. That should end any unwanted conversations quickly. Hanging up quarantine signs is your own option.

13. If a family member dies in quarantine, Seal off the room until professionals can deal with it. Don't risk it. If you decide to take matters into your own hands, Wear a tyvex suit and mask/respirator or long pants and long sleeves. Tuck your sleeves into your gloves. Dig your grave prior to moving the body. Spray the areas of the body you intend to touch with your bleach solution and wait 10 minutes before touching the body. Avoid touching the torso and head of the deceased person and only touch the disinfected extremities. Disinfect you clothing and shower after the operation is complete.

14. Do not wait for the government to shut down the schools before you pull your kids out!!!! The government is historically reactive. Be proactive.

Items to have on hand:

1. Rubber Gloves
2. N95/100 Masks or respirator
3. Tyvex coveralls
4. 4 mil plastic or painters plastic
5. Duct tape - many rolls
6. Chlorine bleach and bacterial soap
7. Blood pressure monitor
8. stethoscope
9. thermometer

Remember in a pandemic There could be an extended interruption to your electric power. You should consider alternative lighting and heating methods. Battery, propane, kerosine, and gasoline generators are possible options. There's a good chance that TV and radio stations will no longer be able to broadcast if there is a power failure in your area. A good quality battery operated radio, capable of receiving short wave stations will enable you to stay informed of developments in the outside world. Cell phones may go down as well have a back up, ham radio or a cb...

I was thinking about this today. My big point that I ponder over is when ? Obviously one that depends on a paycheck to live on can't stay home at the smallest indication of a outbreak, so the question becomes when would you go into quarantine protocols ? WHen it turns up in your state ? Your county ? or your city ? What if you work abroad ?
I'm interested to hear what yall have to say.

I have a friend on another board that frequently flies to Nigeria, (oil business), he has said he will not go back until there is a resolution of the problem. He also advises they are under armed guard the entire time they are in Nigeria. Good money, but is it worth dying for?

Yeah, I would delay going over there, the thing that I am wondering is say the guy they brought back to Atlanta. Do we start now to take quarantine procedures ? Do we wait until there are x number of cases in Georgia ? Dow we wait until it reaches our state ? our county ? That is what I have not came to the conclusion on, at what point do we decide, ok I'm not going to work any more until the outbreak is over ? I think it is going to be different, but it would be interesting and educational to hear when people will go into a lock down mode. I had always said that if something like this hit the US, I would just stay at home, but now this Ebola is indeed in the United States and here I am still going to work.

The thing that bothers me is, it seems no two scientist can agree on the severity or the threat level. There has NEVER been a documented case of Ebola in the United States. Now we have two. God only knows what is coming across the border. I suspect big Pharma was instrumental in getting the two patients here. Whoever comes with a cure will make a lot of money and now they have two victims to experiment on. Always follow the money. There is also a school of thought that Ebola was released in Africa as a population control. The Military and Government would never release a virus that they did not have a cure for. Population control is a big issue with the ruling class.

For them to make money on the cure, people with money have to have it. When you think about it that way it becomes very scary, las I checked there were no rich countries in Africa.
After some thought, I am thinking that when it hits a surrounding state might be my limit...

You might want to look at North Africa. Some of the richest countries in the world are there, Like Dubai and Saudi Arabia...

What I was meaning is that there is more money to be made off the United States than there is off the African countries. The top African countries are measured in the Billions, where as even Mexico is measured int he Trillions.

Here are the richest African countries

25. South Africa: $619.840 billion (up 22.6%)
27. Egypt: $574.717 billion (up 30.4%)
30. Nigeria: $521.359 billion (up 64.1%)
43. Algeria: $302.476 billion (up 30.7%)
58. Morocco: $189.090 billion (up 38.7%)
62. Sri Lanka: $147.719 billion (up 61.2%)
64. Angola: $139.059 billion (up 38.3%)
66. Ethiopia: $132.418 billion (up 89.2%)
69. Tunisia: $113.389 billion (up 24.4%)
75. Ghana: $94.108 billion (up 67.9%)

Compared to North American Countries
1. USA: US$17.528 trillion (up 19.1%)
10. Mexico: $1.927 trillion (up 22.8%)
13. Canada: $1.585 trillion (up 19.3%)
